Usability testing can be a nice way to earn some extra money on the side, but is Validately a place worth joining? Can you really make an easy $10 per test that you take or is this all somehow a scam?
It's a shame that you even have to question whether or not this place is a scam, but I completely understand. There are just too many darn scams out there and it is always best to look further into things instead of just going out there and signing up, and potentially wasting time.
As a spoiler alert, I'll tell you that No Validately is not a scam. However, there are a few downsides to the job, as there are with most usability testing websites, they should be aware of. In this review I'll be going over what the job was like as a tester, the application process and requirements, how much you can make, complaints and more.
After reading this you should have a better understanding of whether or not becoming a tester at Validately is right for you.
If you are familiar with usability testing websites then you probably already know what the deal is. But if not, I'll explain it…
Usability testing websites like Validately pay people to test out websites/apps on their desktop computers as well as smart phones. In the reason is because businesses are paying them to test out there websites/apps.
Of course every website/app needs to be working as smoothly as possible. For example, no one wants Ian e-commerce website that has a bunch of glitches during the checkout, making it nearly impossible for people to purchase products… Which would kill their business.
Usability testing is a big thing nowadays and it works great. It is a cheap and easy way for businesses to get people to test out sites/apps and is nice for people like us because it provides a job opportunity.
Usability testing is a job provides the ability to make money remotely and whenever you feel like it… And I'm sure that is something that everyone loves the sound of.
Making Money as a Tester at Validately
So this place has what they call unmoderated tests and moderated tests. The unmoderated ones are much more common and if you do join as a tester, this is what you are going to be seeing the most of.
With unmoderated tests you will be provided with a list of tasks to perform on a website or app. You will simply go through the tasks as you record your screen and speak your thoughts aloud. But there is no WebCam needed here… You only get your screen recorded along with your voice.
These unmoderated tests usually take around 10 to 15 minutes to record in then you will answer a short survey afterwards, which doesn't take long at all.
The moderated tests you will need a WebCam for. With these tests you will be screen sharing with a moderator and they are a little bit more involved, and also take longer… Usually around 25 minutes.
When completing tests you are going to want to say pretty much everything that comes to your mind. If you are on a website completing some task and are having difficulty, you want to express that. Clients are paying Validately to hire testers to make sure their websites/apps run more smoothly… So feel free to speak your mind and if you don't like something let them know.
The Application Process
Does this sound like a job you might like doing? Well then let's talk about the application process…
Most people reading this can probably go out and apply without any problem. You will first have to fill out some demographic information about yourself and pass a screener test, which is pretty simple. The screener test is only one minute long and is just make sure you have what it takes.
- Need to be at least 18
- Need a PayPal account to get paid
- Have to be able to speak English
- Need a good internet connection
- Need a desktop/laptop computer that is either a Mac or a PC with Windows 7 or newer
- An iPhone or Android smartphone
If you meet all the requirements and pass the screener test then you will hear from them via email soon enough… Probably within the next week.
How Much Can You Make?
The unmoderated tests are what you will be getting the most of as a tester and these pay $10 per test… Which as I said take around 10 to 15 minutes.
Now I don't know about you, but getting $10 for a 10 to 15 minute test sounds pretty good to me.And then there are the moderated tests that pay $25 for around 30 minutes
… Also pretty good.
That said, no one is going to make all that much money as a tester at this place. The reason being is because you simply will not have much opportunity. If you get a couple of tests per week, you are lucky. I probably wouldn't count on more than one test per week and it wouldn't be out of the ordinary if you received less than that.
You will get paid via PayPal within seven days of having completed a test.
Getting Screened Out
When you get an invite to a test you will first have to pass a short screener test before taking the actual test… And this seems to be a problem for a lot of people. Apparently the screener tests can be quite frustrating and further decrease the money making potential of this place, which is already quite low.
Too Many Testers/ Not Enough Tests
And my only other complaint really is that there just aren't enough tests out there. It would be nice if you could count on a place like this to give you one or two tests per day, but the reality isn't even close to that.
Maybe there are too many testers, maybe not enough tests… Either way you can't really expect to get many invitations as a tester.
Scam or Not?
Validately is not a scam. I know that there are some people out there claiming that this place is, but the reality is that it is not. You really can make pretty easy money simply looking over websites/apps and speaking your thoughts aloud.
Conclusion - Worth Joining?
But just because this place is not a scam, doesn't mean that it is worth joining. If you are still thinking about joining, then I'm guessing that you are just looking for an extra income opportunity online, because that is all this is. This is a way to make a little bit of extra money, and it is easy, but you certainly cannot count on the money from a job like this.
You can take a look at my list of other usability testing websites for other options that are out there.
And if you're just looking to make money online, and don't really care whether you make it usability testing or by some other means, then I would suggest taking a look at this program that I actually make a living with online.
Anyways... I hope you enjoyed my short review and found it helpful. Please leave any questions or comments down below and I'll get back to you as soon as I can 🙂 And by the way, you can take a look at Validately's FAQ section for some more info.
