Ubertesters Review – Scam or Easy Money Testing Apps?

By Kyle / December 13, 2018

Is Ubertesters worth applying for? Do they really pay for testing out apps or is this all a scam that is just going to be a waste of your time?

I'll get straight to the point here and tell you that No this is not a scam. It is a bit sad that we even have to ask this question when looking into opportunities like this, but unfortunately there are so many scams online that it is a question you should always bring up.

But anyways… In this review I'll be going over what Ubertesters is, the job position they offer as a tester, what the job is like, the pay, requirements and more.

Overall this does seem to be a decent way to make some extra money online in your spare time, but as you will see it is not going to be a good opportunity for everyone.

Ubertesters Review

Ubertesters is a platform that provides a crowd testing service for app developers.

Every app that is created needs to be rigorously tested before going mainstream… Before being released to the masses of people. Could you imagine if the PayPal app didn't let you withdraw money from your account? Or if the Amazon Shopping app had a glitch where it didn't allow you to get the free 2-day shipping that you rightfully deserve as a prime member?

The situations would be horrible and this is where crowd testing comes into play. Crowd testing provides app developers with a cost-effective and easy way to go about ensuring that there app works as it should. It is a cheap way to make sure apps are glitch-free.

Basically what Ubertesters does is connects app developers looking for people to test out there apps with a large crowd of testers from all over the world on all different types of mobile devices to test out there apps. And this is where you… The tester… Come into play.

You can "join the Uber league of testers" in the make money testing out pre-released mobile apps…

Ubertesters Testers Job

But this opportunity does have more strict requirements than a lot of other usability testing jobs out there, as I will go over shortly. So it isn't going to be available for everyone out there.

What You Do as a Tester

After applying for the tester position and getting accepted, which I will provide more info on in a minute, you will need to install the Ubertesters And then take a few tests to show that you have what it takes to do the job.

After that you will be able to complete tests as they become available to you, which could take a while due to the eye amount of new testers out there.

The projects you get will vary. Many of them are aimed at locating bugs so that the developers can patch them. A bug is nothing more than an error or glitch within a software. So as a tester you will be performing certain tasks and making sure that everything runs smoothly. When you find a bug you will be able to log it easily so that it can be fixed.

Tools to Make Your Life Easier

It's all about providing the best possible service for the clients, but this also makes it easier and all around better for the testers out there looking to make money on this platform.

A few of the tools that you will be able to use include the following…

Bug Reporting Tool

The bug reporting told makes it easy to report bugs, as you can imagine. When you are testing out in app, you will be able to simply click on an in-app button to report any bug that you find. This alerts the developers exactly where the bug is and makes things simple for both parties.

Screenshot Editing

You will also have access to their screenshot editing toll which allows you to easily submit issues that you find in a visual manner.

Pictures or worth a thousand words, so this is definitely a big help.

Video Recording

And of course they have their video recording tool that allows you to easily record videos while navigating around certain features inside an app as well as attaching videos to certain issues you find.

Requirements

But before you can start making money as a tester going around finding bugs and whatnot, you will first have to meet their requirements.

They really don't provide all too much information on the particular requirements for becoming a tester, but they do stay on their website that they are crowd testing method consists of global professional QA's, either experienced QA is or developers. So you can't just be a regular old Joe Schmoe like me without any experience. Or at least this is what I am led to believe.

You will have to pass their certification process which consists of passing a theoretical and practical test in order to get certified.

Now I'm not sure if you actually need to experience, but it seems that you might. However, you might also be able to just pass these tests and get certified without any previous experience.

If you fail any of the tests, they say that you can try again in 2 to 3 months.

And as far as location goes, they are looking for testers all over the world. But of course if you live in countries like the US, UK, Australia, etc. you are probably going to get more opportunities.

Application Process

1) Sign up

This will consist of filling out a sign-up form in which you enter all your personal information.

After that you will connect your device.

2) Get certified

Then it's time to get certified… Which means you have to pass the tests that I just mentioned above.

After you pass these tests and sign a nondisclosure agreement, you will be good to go. You will then be able to take tests and earn money. Just don't expect them start flowing in right away, because, as I mentioned earlier, they state that they have a lot of new testers and it can take a while for you to get your first testing job.

What's The Pay Like?

The amount you get paid depends on your experience, level and where you are from… And of course the project you are testing for.

It is also important to do a good job because you are going to want to get good ratings from clients… Which can help boost your hourly rate.

And yes, you will get paid in hourly rates. This is different from many of the other similar job opportunities out there that pay you a set amount per test that you perform.

That said, don't get the wrong idea about this. It isn't like you're going to be taking tests hour after hour like a full-time job.

As far as actually getting paid goes, you will be able to get your money via PayPal or through Amazon gift cards.

Pros vs Cons

I'm talking about pros vs cons of being a tester here, not being a client.

Pros
  • Flexible schedule
    • You will not have any set hours or anything like that. As a tester, you have the freedom to work one you want, choosing which products you want to work on out of the ones available to you.
  • Get to make a difference
    • This is a very necessary drive and you can feel at least somewhat good about helping out.
  • Can be fun
    • Going on a hunt for bugs can be an exciting time… Especially if you find bugs and really feel like you are doing big things.
Cons
  • Unreliable workload
    • Unfortunately this is not a draw but you can count on when it comes to making money. There is always going to be a steady supply of tests available to be taken.
  • Too many other testers
    • They even state on the website that there are a lot of new testers out there so it may take several weeks for you to even receive your first test job. This is somewhat of a disappointment.
  • Somewhat rigorous application process
    • You will have to pass the theoretical and practical tests in order to be a certified tester. This probably isn't all that bad, but it is more rigorous than a lot of other similar testing sites out there, such as TryMyUI for example.

Conclusion - Worth Joining?

Will first off… Ubertesters.com is definitely not a scam. This place is a legitimate company that provides a legitimate service and you really can make money by testing our apps, just as they say. However, that doesn't necessarily mean that is worth your time.

In my opinion this place looks pretty good. If you are looking to make a little bit of extra money with flexible hours and want to test out apps in order to do so, then I would say go for it. But just don't expect much. This is definitely just an "extra income" opportunity.

If you want to become a usability tester but want to try out a place that doesn't require you to get certified, I would suggest taking a look at this list of usability testing jobs.

And if it is just money you are seeking, and you don't really have some strong desire to be a tester, I would recommend taking a look at this program, which took me from $0 to now making over $6000 a month online.
