Teaching ESL With GoGoKid – Scam or Good Money? [Review]

Woman Teaching ESL Online

If looking for a job that provides flexibility and the opportunity to work remotely, then teaching ESL with Gogokid might be right up your alley. Not only can you set your own schedule and work from anywhere with a good Internet connection, but you also can expect to get paid between $14 and $25 per hour.

But is this really all that is seems to be? There have to be downsides, right? And maybe you have even heard rumors that is possibly a scam… Is it? Will you actually get paid or will it end up being a waste of your time?

In this quick review I’ll be going over what you need to know beforehand. All in all it is a nice way for most people to make some extra money on the side, but there are a few downsides to it that you should be aware of.

*This place often offers sign-on bonuses for new teachers. As I’m writing this they are offering a $300 bonus, but this could change in the future.

What Is Gogokid?

Gogokid

So first off, if you don’t know what Gogokid it is, this place in a nutshell is an online ESL teaching platform for Chinese children, just like VIPKID.

Platforms like this are very popular in Asian countries, mostly China, this being just one of many. So if you do apply here and don’t get accepted for some reason, there are plenty of other opportunities out there like it.

But anyways… This place provides an easy way for Chinese children to learn English as a second language. They can simply log into their account and learn English in a fun environment from native English speakers, which could be you or I.

And as far as pay goes it seems to be pretty competitive, nothing special but on the better side of things when it comes to ESL teaching platforms like this. In my opinion it’s pretty good considering the time you put in.

Life as a Teacher

One of the nice aspects of working for a place such as Gogokid is that you have the ability to choose your own hours and work whenever you want. There are no requirements as to which hours you can choose. However… The peak times are from 7 to 9 PM on weekdays and 9 AM to 9 PM on weekends.

So while you can choose whatever hours you want to work, there is no guarantee that you will actually get scheduled lessons in those time frames.

All lessons are one-on-one and 25 minutes in length. The good thing is that you don’t have to prepare any materials, the lessons being provided to you. That said, they do recommend that you use your own props for demonstration purposes, because of course visual learning is always a good thing and kids have more fun this way, which in turn could help you make more money because they will hopefully be coming back for future lessons.

After each lesson you will have to provide feedback on each student. This is for their parents to see and basically you would just tell them what the student did good in and if they need practice on anything.

Based on reviews I have read from teachers using this place, a lot of teachers really like it and the interactive teaching platform is good quality, making things easy. Some people describe the lessons as “cute and fun”. They are just dry boring lessons, but rather an interactive fun time.

The Pay

When you apply and go through the application process you will be assigned a base pay ranging from seven dollars to $10. This will be determined based on your credentials and on your performance during the interview, which I will go over shortly.

There is also a credit system in place that will reward you if you do a good job.

All in all, you will have the ability to earn anywhere from $14-$25 per hour, which would consist of teaching 2 lessons.

You can easily get paid via PayPal.

Requirements

All applicants will be required to have a bachelor degree, but it doesn’t matter what field you have it in. As long as you have a degree, it is good.

In they don’t care where you live, as long as you have a good Internet connection and can perform the job. But of course you are going to have to be a native English speaker.

I have read online from other reviews that you need at least one year teaching experience, however I am not sure if this is actually a requirement or just a preference that they have when hiring.

Application Process

The first step in the application process is to apply online.

After that you will have to schedule an interview, which will take 30 minutes and will include you basically just showing off your teaching skills  and doing a short demo teaching lesson. For more information on what you should be focusing on when teaching, you can read their performance guide.

Next up you will have to attend the online orientation and lastly submit paperwork as well as sign a contract for six months.

I know that signing a contract may be something that most people don’t want to do, but remember that this is a job where you do not have to work some massive number of hours each week… You set your own hours.

Downsides to the Job

Glassdoor is always a good site to go to when looking into job opportunities like this. Some of the downsides they came across that are worth mentioning include…

Not guaranteed hours

that said, if you do a good job some kids will keep rebooking with you on a regular basis

I mentioned earlier that you can set your own hours but there is no guarantee that you will actually get lessons within those hours. The families of the children books the lessons for them and they can choose between any teacher they want to.

That said, once you start doing this for a while, and if you are doing a good job, you will start to get students coming back to you over and over again, which leads to more steady hours each week.

Takes time to get “regulars”

When starting off it will be the hardest for you. You won’t have any reputation and the people working here that get a lot of students are the ones that have been doing this for some time and have built up a following of loyal students.

How long will this take? Well that all depends on how much the students like you among other variables.

Communication issues with management

It’s also worth mentioning that there are a fair number of complaints about communication issues with management… Such as them taking too long to respond. Unfortunately this is just how it usually is when it comes to online work like this.

Should You Teach?

Teaching ESL online can be a very rewarding experience and many people really enjoy it. As far as Gogokid goes, based on what I see this is a good platform out there for doing this with a pretty solid reputation.

I would say go for it if you are thinking about applying, just keep in mind that this is definitely not an opportunity that you should be relying on for income… But rather seen as a side-income opportunity, at least for now until you get the hang of it.

If you want to, take a look at some other online ESL teaching opportunities that are out there as well.
