Literably Job Review – Up to $20/hr or Scam Opportunity?

Transcribing on Computer

If you are looking for a remote job that pays decent money and that you can work on your own schedule, then Literably is one of the options you have out there.

I first came across this job while searching around on Zip Recruiter. It was advertised as a remote job where you can make your own schedule, with no experience needed to apply, and that you can make $10-$20 per hour with… Which all sounded pretty darn good to me. In the job posting it also stated that some of the tasks you would be required to perform include…

  • Transcription
  • Captioning
  • Finding reading errors

I was aware that it involved transcription, but wasn't really sure what it meant by "finding reading errors". However, after doing some more research it all made sense. In this Literably job review I'll be going over all you need to know and will be painting a clear picture of what exactly this job offers and what you are looking at.

What Is Literably?

The first thing we need to discuss before you can understand the remote work position that Literably offers is what exactly this place is. Basically Literably is a service that education providers, such as schools, contract to assess students' reading abilities in grades K-8. They monitor progress, identify reading difficulties and so on.

In a nutshell how it works is like this: students read into their computers (iPads, laptops, etc.) that have the Literably software on them and teachers are provided with scores of accuracy, fluency and comprehension so that they can better understand what their students need more help with.

Your Job as a 'Scorer'

Your job comes into play between the student and the teacher. As a remote contractor you are called a "scorer"… Because you will be helping score the students'reading abilities. Basically what you will be doing is listening to audio recordings of students reading and transcribe as well as caption reading errors.

Word omissions, additions, phonetic errors… These are all things you will be looking for when listening in on the students reading.

It's not really your typical transcription job like places such as Scribie, but it is transcription and it is something you can feel good about. After all, you are helping students learn.

How Much Money Will You Make?

The job posting I came across stated that you can earn between $10-$20 per hour. However, I would like to say that this is going to vary greatly depending on how skillful you are at transcribing.

Being fast is key… But of course you also have to be accurate as well. This takes practice and if you are starting out doing transcription for the first time you likely won't make anywhere close to $20 in the beginning.

Transcription is one of those jobs where you "write your own paycheck" so to speak… At least to some extent.

Getting Paid

They pay every week through PayPal, so of course you are going to need a PayPal account.

I personally have no problem with this although it would be nice to see some other options as well. PayPal is a quick, easy, and reliable way to get paid.

How Flexible is The Schedule Really?

So they tell you that you can make your own schedule but how true is this statement really? It's not like I have never seen job postings before that say this but then there is some catch to it that is a big letdown... Kind-of like online ESL teaching jobs where you can make your own schedule, but they aren't all that flexible due to peak teaching times and only certain times really being worth it.

Fortunately here you really do get to make your own schedule. You will be able to log in any time and complete work that is available to you. This makes it an excellent little way to make some extra cash on the side, around your already busy schedule.

Requirements & Applying for The Job

One of the other things that they stated in the job posting that I came across was that there is no experience needed, and this is true. There is no experience needed and no special requirements really. You just have to be fluent in English and have the computer and Internet connection necessary for completing the work... And of course have a PayPal account so that you can get paid.

Part of the application process is for you to pass six sample recordings, which really wont take long. You should be able to get through these in less than an hour easily. The purpose is for them to be able to assess your ability as a scorer and see if you have what it takes.

Job Training

You won'y be left completely in the dust. You get access to training videos that guide you through everything you will be doing. There are going to be training recordings that you will have to transcribe and will be evaluated on for accuracy. They are looking for less than 2% word errors so listen carefully and try your best. Getting a good pair of headphones may well be worth it if you are serious about this.

Scam or Worth Your Time?

I know that you definitely have to be careful when it comes to online jobs, with all the scams out there and everything. However, I assure you that Literably is completely legitimate and is not a scam in any way, shape or form. They provide a great service and are a reputable company.

If you are looking for decent pay and a flexible schedule where you can make a little bit of extra money in your spare time, then this place may be worth giving a try.
