VIPKID seems to be a pretty nice opportunity to make money teaching ESL online. But is it really all that it is cracked up to be? Or is VIPKID a scam that is going to be a waste of your time?
First things first, I can assure you that this is not a scam. However… there are a few downsides to working for VIPKID that every one should know before they decide to get started or not. I this review I’m going to be going over exactly that… what you need to know beforehand.
VIPKID was started in 2013 in China. The whole purpose of this company is to help Chinese kids learn English as a second language (ESL).
They hire independent contractors, which could be you, to work for them and to teach online virtual classrooms. All the work of a teacher is done online and classrooms are 1 on 1.
They curriculum of their ESL courses meet the US Common Core State Standards. They are no joke and are taken seriously.
What You Do As a Teacher
Teaching ESL is nothing complicated and if you think you have a strong grasp of the English language then you can probably do this if you are committed and willing to put forth effort.
Each will have to give private ESL classes to children from China. These classes are virtual, as I’ve mentioned, which means they are all done online. They are 30 minutes in length and when I say they are “private”, what I mean is that they are 1 on 1. It will just be you communicating with a single student.
25 minutes of each lesson will be dedicated to the course material. The remaining 5 minutes is used for somewhat of a Q & A, where students can comment on the lesson and so forth.
Before each lesson you will review the content of what you are to teach. They provide the lessons for you, but you can put your own spin on them.
How Much Money Will You Make
The good thing about working for VIPKID is that they have a base pay, which is the minimum of money you will make while teaching.
The base pay is $14 – $18 per lesson, which means that each 30 minute lesson will pay you $7 – $9, which isn’t bad at all.
There are also bonuses that you will receive for teaching lessons and with these bonuses you are able to make up to $22/hr.
What Are The Requirements?
In order to become an ESL teacher for VIPKID you are going to first need to make sure that you meet the following requirements.
- Classroom K12 experience in either the US or Canada
- A Bachelor’s degree. It doesn’t matter in what area this degree is in. Any Bachelor’s degree is sufficient
- Desktop of Laptop computer, sorry tablets and smartphones won’t suffice
- Fast internet connection
- Webcam and microphone
Other than these you don’t have anything to worry about. There is no background check, drug test, or anything of that nature.
The only other requirement would be that you will have to sign a contract for 6 months. That means you are going to have to be available for 6 months to teach when they want you to.
Honestly I don’t have any harsh complaints about the company and I haven’t been able to find many online either. Reviews for this company are pleasant and paint a good picture, which is nice.
However, there are some complaints that I will go over that everyone should know before they get themselves into this.
Teaching Times Are Too Early
One of the common complaints are that the times you are scheduled to teach are too early. I have no problem with this because I am an early bird, but some people do.
Because you are teaching children in China, the time difference can be somewhat of a problem for some.
The times you will be scheduled to teach will vary with the demands of the students, which can schedule whenever they want. But typically you can expect to be teaching at the following hours depending on your time zone…
For me its not too bad because I live on the East Coast, which has peak times between 5am – 9am on weekdays. But if you are on Pacific Time its going to be a little more difficult.
But look on the bright side. You don’t have to go into work. All you have to do is open up your computer.
Another common complaint is that this job is inconsistent. You can’t really count on it to make a fixed income because the hours are not fixed.
You never know what hours are going to be booked and what is going to be open. This will vary with student demands, other teachers’ availability, and other things.
Poor communication is one complaint that I have come across multiple times.
Your students’ parents can leave feedback on your teaching and it can get confusing. The parents usually don’t know English (that’s why they are paying for you to teach their kids) and they leave comments which are then translated and this makes things complicated.
But this is nothing that you can’t work through. It just comes with the territory.
Technical problems are something else that comes with the territory of working an online job. Unfortunately they aren’t very forgiving with such difficulties. Their support team isn’t all that great and it can be hard to get tech support with issues.
What makes it worse is that technical problems are often passed off as being the teachers problem and you are likely to be the one penalized for them.
Final Thoughts, Is VIPKID Worth It?
VIPKID is definitely no scam, and overall I really like everything about it. The pay is good, the job an be fun and is something you can feel good about, and you can work from home which is awesome.
I just definitely wouldn’t recommend this for someone who is looking to earn a full-time income. It is too unreliable and unrealistic for that. But you could always couple this job with other similar jobs to make a living.
