Whether you are looking to learn a new skill or make money online teaching a skill, Skillshare is one of your options for making this happen. But is this a legit place? Or is Skillshare a scam possibly that is going to be a waste of your time and possibly your money as well?
I was getting some questions about the legitimacy of this place so I decided to take a look into it and see what I find. To make a long story short… No this place is definitely not a scam. HOWEVER… there are some downsides to it that I will be going over in this short review.

Skillshare is a platform that gives freelancers the ability to market their skills for teaching purposes. There are close to 20,000 classes offered right now and you can find anything from food preparation classes, to digital music mixing classes, to design classes, to online marketing and much much more.
You can pretty much find a class for any skill that you want to learn that is capable of being taught in an online classroom environment like this.
Who Skillshare Is For
There are 2 types of people that will benefit from this site…. those that are looking to learn a new skill and those that have a skill and are looking to earn money teaching it to others.
If you are a freelancer then this is a pretty cool site that I think you should consider. Rather than work on freelance sites like UpWork and Guru.com using your skills to perform gigs, you would instead just teach your skills to students. Its a new ballpark and some people find it very rewarding, especially helping others learn.
How It Works
For students its pretty simple. You can get started as a free member but your access to classrooms will be limited. If you want full access you will have to pay $15/month or if you pay by the year it is $99.
Once a member you will be able to search for classes, projects, and workshops that you want to be a part of to learn whatever it is that you are looking to learn. There are close to 20,000 classrooms available as I’ve mentioned and plenty of skills you can learn.
Classes are in video tutorial form which make it easy to follow and learn from.
Once you become a premium member you can create your own classrooms, workshops, and projects.
Classrooms are pre-made classes that students can visit over and over again. Workshops, on the other hand, are live training events where you can interact with students more. And then projects are just completed projects that teachers and students can post to show people their work.
As a teacher you will get paid based on the amount of time that students attend your classes. I’ll go over this now…
How Much Can Teachers Make?
Skillshare claims that “top teachers make up to $40,000 a year” and I wouldn’t argue with this. I don’t have any personal experience making money on this site but this figure seems reasonable for the top teachers that are on this site.
However, I do think it should be noted that these are only the “top” teachers. Most teachers will end up earning far less.
Like I said, the amount you make will depend on the amount of time that students attend your classes. But it depends on more than just that. The way the payment system works is kind of strange.
It works like this…. All of the money that they earn in membership fees goes into a pool (not literally). Then up to 50% of this money is distributed to the teachers based on the amount of time that students attended their classes.
So the amount a teacher will make depends on the amount of premium members there currently are as well as the amount of time students are spending in their classrooms.
As far as I can tell it doesn’t take much to become a teacher and create classes here. This means that many of the classes that are out there are by self proclaimed professionals…. who might in actuality not be professionals on the skill they are teaching. And this means that the information being taught might be wrong.
This is a big downside to Skillshare but on the plus side they do have a good ranking system where students can leave feedback on teachers. This allows you to see what others think about the teacher so that you can differentiate the good from the bad. It does a pretty good job at solving this problem but I still thought I should mention it.
Making good money on this site is by no means an easy task. Especially for those just starting out, it will be quite a challenge. It takes a while to build up a reputation and credibility within the marketplace and without one you won’t make much of anything.
I mentioned that freelancers should consider this site but I would only recommend it as an alternate way to supplement your income. Definitely don’t rely on this.
I have no personal experience with this but apparently there are a lot of people being charge for payments they didn’t approve of. This is a big problem so its important for me to bring it to light here.
The review site SiteJabber is filled with reviews all about the same thing… people signing up for the free trial and then being charged even though they canceled it before it was up.
This is definitely a pretty serious problem because these similar complaints date back to 2015 and are still coming out. This problem should have been fixed but apparently isn’t.
Anyways… you can’t always trust reviews on sites like SiteJabber but they are important to consider.
Final Thoughts & What I Recommend
Although Skillshare definitely has some downsides and even has some questionable behavior I still consider this place legitimate. Overall I like what I see with this site and think it provides a great service. It easily connects students with classes that teach the skills they want and also gives freelancers a unique opportunity to make money teaching other people their skills.
Ultimately the choice of joining Skillshare is up to you. One piece of advice I will give to teaches is to not count on earning a lot of money, especially in the beginning. It will take a while to “get going” and most teachers just don’t make much.
As an alternative to making money online teaching on Skillshare I would recommend you to take a look at how I make money online and see if you think it is something you would like to do.
I actually make a living working online for myself and I think its a pretty awesome job. If you want to learn more about it you can read this post I wrote about it. In this post I go over what it is that I do, how it all works, and how others can get started doing the same.
