Is PeoplePerHour a Scam? What To Know Before Using This Site

By Kyle / June 22, 2017

Whether you are a freelancer looking for online work of some sort of you are a business and need to hire a freelancer, PeoplePerHour might be a place worth considering. I have been getting some questions about this place recently and whether or not they are legitimate and worth your time.

If you are wondering is PeoplePerHour a scam then you are in the right place. I got around finally to looking into everything and in this review I’ll be going over what you need to know. I’ll be covering what this place offers, who it is for, the goods and bads, and ultimately whether or not I recommend that you join.

  • Website: peopleperhour.com
  • Type: Freelance Job Finder
  • Recommended?: Yes, for some; more on this

PeoplePerHour is a freelance site that matches online freelancers with individuals or businesses that need some sort of work done. They are similar to sites like freelancer.com or even Fiverr.

Whether you are a freelancer looking for work or someone looking to hire a freelancer, PeoplePerHour is a decent choice.

How It Works

If you are someone looking for a freelancer to hire you can browse the job offers that are available at the moment. They go by the hour and can be as short as 1 hour in length. These job offers can be in many different areas such as website design, graphic design, branding, video creation, app design, SEO, writing, translation, and just about everything else you can think of.

Just to give you an idea of what you are looking at here, here is a list of featured job offers, which are offers that freelancers have posted…

On the other hand, if you are a freelancer looking for work, you can browse the job postings that are posted by those looking to hire. According to your profile you will also be notified of relevant job postings that PeoplePerHour thinks you might like.

So both freelancers and people looking to hire can post jobs and can search for jobs which I think is nice.

If you are a buyer looking to pay someone for a job you will have to put money aside into an escrow account. And if you are a freelancer you will have to bid on the jobs you want. The buyer will then have the ability to choose who they want. When the work is performed and over with, the money that was set aside in the escrow account by the buyer is then released to the seller (the freelancer).

How Freelancers Can Get Started

I recommend reading this whole review first. But if you want to get started right away here is how you do so.

First you are going to need to sign up. This is free to do and all you need is your email along with some personal information, nothing much. You will then need to confirm your email via a link that is sent to you.

After the initial sign up you will need to fill out your profile so that buyers know who you are and what you do. You will upload a picture of yourself, write a short description about what it is that you do, and list out your skills.

In addition you can also set a minimum hourly rate.

After this is completed buyers will be able to contact you for jobs that they need done. But since you are just starting out and haven’t built up credibility and gotten any reviews yet, you are going to need to search offers for yourself instead of waiting for them to come to you.

What I Like

2-Way Platform

I like how this platform is set up so that you can post jobs and look for jobs. It doesn’t matter if you are a buyer or seller. Sellers set up their profile and post job offers so that buyers can find them and hire them. Alternatively, buyers can post jobs that they want done so that sellers can find them and bid on them.

Seller Protection

Freelancers are protected from being scammed and not paid for their work. PeoplePerHour forces buyers to set money aside in an escrow account before the job has started. So PeoplePerHour already has the money when a freelancer starts a job, and when completed they simply release it to that freelancer.

Lots of Opportunity

If you have in-demand skills then there probably is going to be no shortage of work here. This is a fairly large platform and you could be performing work for people all across the globe.

What I Don’t Like

Hard To Get Started

This isn’t really a complaint about PeoplePerHour but more a general compliant. And that is that it is difficult to get started. When you just start out you have no reviews from buyers yet and no one really trusts you. This means you aren’t going to get many offers. It can be a struggle to get going but once you do it gets better.

PeoplePerHour claims that the average job receives 40 offers in a single day but I’m not so sure this is true. Actually I don’t believe this.

Bidding Can Cost You

When you find a job you want to do you will have to bid on that job. PeoplePerHour gives you 15 free bids every month but that really isn’t very much. If you want to bid on more than 15 jobs/month then you will have to buy more bid blocks.

Handling Fee

PeoplePerHour charges a 20% fee starting each month until you have earned $600 (approx). After that the fee drops down to 5%. This is a pretty hefty fee and will really cut into your earnings.

Final Thoughts & What I Recommend

Overall I like what I see with PeoplePerHour. They are a trustworthy site for both freelancers and people looking to hire. Sure, there are scammers on this site and you will find reviews of people that have been scammed, but this is something that is going to happen no matter what freelance site you go to. I think that PeoplePerHour does a good job at keeping it safe for the freelancers out there.

So if you are looking to sell your skills by the hour online, then I do recommend PeoplePerHour or at least think that you should consider them.

Alternatively, if you are interested in working for yourself online then I would suggest taking a look at how I make money online.

I make a living working for myself online, which I think is a pretty awesome job. You can learn more about it by clicking the link below that will take you to a post I wrote. In the post I wrote I explain what it is that I do, how it all works, and how others can do the same.
