Is it really possible to make money by saving energy? Can you really cut back on the A/C or maybe stop using the dishwasher and make money from this? Well… That is what OhmConnect claims. They have a program where you can actually get paid to save energy.
But this sounds a little bit fishy, does it not? Is this all just a bunch of bunk? Is it somehow a scam?
Well… I'll get straight to the point and tell you that No it is not a scam. This company is getting more and more mainstream attention with this new innovative business model. I actually first came across the opportunity after reading an article an article talking about some guy that is making $487 a month by saving money on electricity. This was published on the fairly reputable site called Penny Hoarder.
Will you be able to make $487 a month? Probably not… But it is a nice way to make a little bit of extra cash and you can feel good about it since you are also helping the environment.
I know there is a lot of confusion surrounding this opportunity which is the point of me writing this review. Don't worry... I'll go over how it all works and how much you can realistically make...
What Is OhmConnect?
Okay... So let's first talk a little bit about what exactly OhmConnect is. OhmConnect is a free service available to people in the US and Canada that helps you get paid for saving electricity and helping the environment.
Their goal is to reduce the amount of "dirty energy" used. Basically how it works is after you sign up and get everything hooked up properly, you will get alerted during times of "OhmHours" which is when you want to save as much electricity as possible. This is when you can get paid for doing so.
"Dirty Energy" Explained:
The goal of OhmConnect is to reduce the amount of dirty energy used. What is dirty energy? It is the energy produced from inefficient and environmentally destructive power plants… Power plants sometimes referred to as "peaker" plants because they are used to meet high demands of electricity.
Reducing the demand of electricity during these OhmHours, as they call them, reduces the demand for these inefficient power plants.
It's Kind-of Like a Cashback Rewards Program
I once heard this opportunity compared to a cashback program. I guess it is a little bit similar, but the difference is that you don't get cash back for spending money… You get cash for saving electricity and money… So it's like a double whammy!
How the heck do they make money?
Now I know that many people who are questioning whether or not this is a scam are wondering how the heck this place makes money… After all, they have to be making money to stay in business, right?
Overall it is pretty darn confusing. OhmConnect trades energy as if they were a power plant. They place bids for an amount of energy and provide OhmHours to members. When these OhmHours are offered depends on when grid operators pay enough and except their bids.
In a nutshell they are selling aggregated energy reduction and this is what you, as a customer, will be participating in.
In laymen terms they get paid from municipal utilities to conserve energy.
How You Can Make Money
How can you cash in on this opportunity? Well… Is pretty simple…
1) Connect your utility account
The first step would be to connect your utility account to OhmConnect. Right now only people in certain areas of California, Texas and Ontario have the ability to do this. However, in the future the opportunity will likely expand. You are able to connect if you are a...
- California user with PG&E (Pacific Gas & Electric), SDG&E (San Diego Gas & Electric) or SCE (Southern California Edison)
- Texas user with Smart Meter Texas
- Ontario user with Toronto Hydro
2) Get notified
You will get notified once or twice a week via email or text the day before dirty power plants kick on. These OhmHours are when you want to reduce your energy consumption and make a little bit of money.
They also have an app where you can receive notifications and more, but currently it is unavailable because it is being updated.
3) Get paid
And that is it. Then you get paid! Your smart reader provider measures your savings and OhmConnect pays you with points, which you can then exchange for real money.
When you save on electricity you earn points depending on how much energy you save and can then cash these out via PayPal or for other rewards such as gift cards.
They also give out prizes to people who participate, such as gift cards, Apple watches, and on the website I even saw an all-inclusive vacation to Costa Rica being available.
How to Make The Most of It
If you want to make the most of this opportunity then you are going to want to shut off pretty much everything you can during OhmHours. Big appliances like washing machines, dishwashers, pool pumps should be turned off completely, and cutting back on the A/C would be advisable.
And don't go running out to the laundry mat to wash your clothes… That defeats the purpose. Sure, it is a way to get one up on the system, but you wouldn't be helping out the environment any more than normally.
How Much Money Can You Make?
Okay... So the big question that everyone wants to know… How much money can you make?
Unfortunately this is a very difficult question to answer… because it is going to vary greatly.
I mentioned at the very beginning an article that talked about some guy who made $487 in a month. However, after reading the article I found that it was a bit misleading. First of all, the month that this guy made this amount paid 3x the normal amount due to a "Flex Alert" that was issued to get as many consumers to save as much as possible. Because of this he made $188 in two hours alone.
That said... The guy does still make some decent money. But will you be able to as well?
I have read through quite a few reviews from people trying this out and it seems that many people are making no more than $20-$30 a month or so, and of course are complaining about it… But many of these people may not be doing much at all to take advantage of the opportunity.
Disorganization - Upon reading over reviews I found that OhmConnect seems to be a bit disorganized. I've read complaints about the approval status taking forever, the support lacking and so on.
Points Not Awarded Correctly - I have also read over some comments from people claiming that they have not been awarded points as they should have been based on their energy savings, which is sometimes due to a disagreement between OhmConnect and the utility provider.
"Waste of time" - Then of course there are the complaints from people saying that this is nothing more than a waste of time. But again, we have no idea how much effort these people are putting into it. I am telling you this because I want this review to be as unbiased as possible.
There are undoubtedly going to be some kinks that this company needs to work out. After all, this is a one-of-a-kind business that is a pioneer in this space.
Pros v Cons
- It's free
- You make money by saving money
- Helps save the environment
- It's super easy
- Not available in many spots
- Probably won't make much money
- Seems to be some disorganization
Definitely Not a Scam!
OhmConnect is in no way, shape or form a scam. This is the real deal and although the whole money flow is extremely confusing, they do present a legit way to make money from saving energy, which I think is great. Sure, they have kinks that they need to work out as I mentioned above, but I think that this is possibly a revolutionary new opportunity that could really grow in the future.
