Is Cutco a Scam? A Possible Pyramid Scheme?

By Kyle / May 30, 2017

Cutco is pretty well known for recruiting the younger generations to get out and work from them as independent distributors. But should you really take this opportunity or is Cutco a scam that is just going to be a waste of time?

I am very familiar with Cutco and have known about them for years. I have even had several friends that worked selling their knives. But this doesn’t necessarily mean that they offer a good business opportunity. I have reviewed this sales rep job and there are definitely some things that you should know that you might not be told by other people.

Disclosure: I am in no way affiliated with Cutco. I am nothing more than a 3rd party reviewing this business opportunity in the most unbiased way I can.

CutcoCutco Business Opportunity Review

  • Company: Cutco
  • Website: cutco.com
  • Recommended?: For some, more on this

Vector Marketing, which is Cutco’s sales arm usually targets college kids and people around that age. They usually tell them about how they can be making $15/hr and more with a very flexible schedule, working on their own time.

Everyone is hired with this company. They will want to set up an “interview” with you but really this is just a session where they talk about the job. They tell you about all the money you can make and then at the very end they tell you what you really are going to be doing.

You will be working as an independent contractor selling Cutco knives. The reason I say that everyone is hired is because they don’t actually “hire” anyone. Because you are an independent contractor Cutco has nothing to lose by having you sell their knives. You are the one that is going to be covering all the costs that come with selling the knives, such as driving around door to door and all of that. The only real cost they have is training you, which isn’t much because they have massive training sessions.

The Cost to Join

To get started in this job you are going to need to purchase a Cutco knife set. This is what you will be demonstrating with as you go door to door trying to sell this cutlery.

These demo sets will cost you several hundred bucks. So expect to put out $300 plus to get started with this opportunity.

How Much Do You Get Paid?

The pay really depends on how good of a salesperson you are.

They advertise the job as paying around $15 or $18/hr, depending on where you live, but this doesn’t necessarily mean you are going to make that much. If you are a horrible salesperson you might not. If you are a good salesperson you might make more than that.

Pay is half commission based and half base pay based. The commission you can earn per sales ranges from 10% to 25%. When you start out you will earn just 10% but can move up by selling more and more.

You will get your base pay of $15/hr or whatever they told you no matter what. But if you do presentations and make sales that generate commission that are more than your base pay, you will just get those commissions and not the base pay.

For example: In one hour you have one demo presentation schedules. You sell $200 worth of knives at a 10% commission during that hour which means you make $20. Because that $20 is higher than your $15 base pay, you will just get the $20 and not the base pay.

The Kicker

The kicker here is what they don’t tell you. The base pay that I’ve been talking about sounds awesome right? I mean it seems like you will never make less than that per hour right? Wrong!

You will only get base pay when you are having a conference or a demo with potential clients. You won’t get paid a dime for the time you spend trying to find potential clients.

Is Cutco a Pyramid Scheme?

There is seriously A LOT of misinformation out there about Cutco and Vector Marketing being a pyramid scheme.

Folks… its not! It is not even close to being a pyramid scheme.

Pyramid schemes are focused on recruitment. They are all about recruiting other members in and making money off of them buying into it and getting started.

The reason it isn’t is because there is no incentive for you to go out there recruit other people to join in on this business opportunity. You won’t get paid commissions for them buying in when they buy a demo kit. You won’t get paid from the money they make.

Its just not a pyramid scheme. The only way you get paid is by selling knives yourself.

Cutco is in no way shape or form a pyramid scheme or a mlm opportunity.

How Much Will You “Really” Get Paid

I searched high and low for an official income disclosure from this company but I am unable to find one.

However, judging from the many negative reviews out there that complain about the pay they receive, you can assume that many people end up making little money.

The bottom line here is that this is a sales job. If you have that salesperson type personality you can really excel, but if you don’t then this is going to be difficult.

The amount you can get paid here can vary greatly and ultimately comes down to how good of a sales person you are.

Final Thoughts & What I Recommend

I definitely do NOT consider Cutco to be a scam. The only somewhat “scammy” part of it all is how they recruit younger people in by telling them how they will be making $15/hr but they leave out all the reasons they might make less than that.

The only people I would recommend this opportunity to are those who believe they have what it takes to make sales. Do you think you can sell people on a bunch of knives??? If not then this probably isn’t the best opportunity for you. But if you do then go for it!

Personally I would be horrible at selling Cutco knives because I just don’t have the personality for it. And if you are like me then what I would suggest to you is to take a peek at how I make money online. Why? Well because what I do is flexible, even more so than selling Cutco knives, and you can make good money.

I make a living working for myself online and I really enjoy it. I have written a post on what I do to make money online, how it all works, and how others can do the same. You can click the link below to read about it.
