If you are running a blog or any sort of website for that matter, you are probably looking to bring visitors to your site. And getting free traffic from search engines is like the holy grail of traffic generating methods. Google has close to 70% of the market share, which makes it the most used search engine by far. For this reason figuring out how to find a Google ranking keyword should be at the top of your priority list.
Its not like you just go out and start writing articles and they are going to get good rankings and get you loads of traffic. You have to go out and find keywords you can target in your articles that are going to rank good and bring in traffic. And this is what I’m going to be going over in this article.
But before I go over how I am able to continually find Google page 1 ranking keywords (not every time) I first want to briefly touch upon what a keyword actually is in the way I am referring to it.
What Is A Keyword?
A keyword is a word or phrase that is people search for on search engines like Google. So a keyword, although singular, could be referring to a long phrase of words.
Take for example this: You are looking up a good six pack ab workout so you search in Google for “good six pack ab workouts”. That entire phrase is a keyword and Google will pull up a list of websites that either use this keyword directly or have very relevant content relating to it.
Whatever people type into the search bar in Google is considered a keyword.
You Don’t Want Any Old Keyword
Not all keywords worth using. There are 2 main things that you need when you are choosing a keyword to write about.
First off, the keyword has to be one that people actually search for. There is no point of using a keyword that people don’t search for on Google because you won’t be getting any traffic from it even if you do rank on page 1.
Second, you want a keyword that is “low competition”. What I mean by this is that you are looking for one that isn’t used much on other websites. This way you don’t have to compete as much with other sites to rank high for that keyword.
Take this for example… You have a fitness blog that you are looking to write an article for. You decide to write it on bicep exercises and you title your article “best bicep exercises”, which is your keyword. This is a HORRIBLE keyword to target. If you search that on Google you will find that Bodybuilding.com is ranked positions 1-3 for that keyword and Men’s Health is in position 4, followed by other large company sites. Unless you are writing for a large company yourself you probably don’t have a chance of competing with these large authority sites.
How To Find These Good Keywords To Rank On Page 1 Of Google
Without a doubt you will need a keyword research tool. There is no way around this. There are a lot of different tools you can use, both free and ones you have to pay for. Of course the ones that are available for free are not nearly as good as the ones you pay for, but they are a good start for beginners.
Here I will be showing you the keyword research tool that I use to find good keywords, which is Jaaxy. I have tried several and in my opinion it is the best. You don’t really need anything else other than this.
When you type keywords into Jaaxy it analyzes them and tells you their monthly search volume, competition, the estimated traffic they would generate if you would rank on page 1 of Google, and a few other stats. But without a doubt the search volume and competition is going to be the most important.
How I Use Jaaxy
Going along with the fitness theme, lets say you are looking to get traffic to your website so that you can sell or promote protein powder. There are many keywords you could focus on with this topic because it is so large.
Lets start by seeing how the keyword “protein powder for women” looks…
The Avg that I circled stands for Average Monthly Searches and as you can see there is 1,111 which is a lot. Just looking at the amount of traffic that could come from this keyword you would might think its a good one to target, but you would be wrong.
Why shouldn’t you target this one? Well.. lets take a look at the competition…
The QSR that I have circled above is what tells you the competition. As you can see it has a number of 203. This means that there are 203 other articles on the internet that are ranked in Google for that exact same keyword. That is a pretty high number and it is nothing I would even consider trying to rank for.
When it comes to competition (QSR), the lower number the better of course. Generally I don’t target any keywords with QSR’s over 100.
Well That Keyword Is No Good, But Here Is An Easy Way To Find A Better One…
When you search for your initial keyword in Jaaxy it doesn’t just show you info for that single keyword. It also gives you a long list of suggestions.
This is one of the best features of Jaaxy. I almost never use the initial keyword that I search because often I find suggestions that are better.
As you can see from the suggestions above there are lots better keywords to target. Take a look at the second one on the list “protein powder for women and weight loss”. It has an average search volume of 181 per month (sorry the arrow is covering up the number) and a QSR of only 55.
I know the search volume isn’t nearly as high as our original keyword, but I would still target it instead due to the QSR alone.
If you are a blogger like me and have your own little personal blog that you are trying to get traffic to it is in your interest to favor a low QSR instead of a high search volume.
Target The “Low Hanging Fruit”
Target the keywords with low QSR’s.
It should be a goal on just about every post you write to rank on page 1 of Google. For small bloggers like me this is only going to be possible by targeting the “low hanging fruit”, which is what people like me call keywords that don’t have much competition.
Over 60% of search traffic click on one of the first 3 search results that come up. On Google the first page contains 10 search results and only the first 3 get over half of the traffic. So as you can imagine, page 2 results don’t get clicked on very much.
These low QSR keywords are going to be the easiest for you to rank for. And although they won’t bring you tons of traffic individually, they add up to bring you lots of traffic as a whole.
Its Not Over Yet… You Have to Consider SERP Competition
Just because you found a low competition keyword with a decent amount of search traffic doesn’t mean you should target it yet. There is still one more very important variable to consider, and that is SERP competition.
SERP stands for “Search Engine Results Page”. Besides using a keyword research tool like Jaaxy, you have to actually go to Google.com and search the keyword you just came up with. I almost always check the SERP competition after I find a keyword that seems good using Jaaxy.
How do you check SERP competition? Here is how. I’ll use the example I used from above which is “protein powder for women and weight loss”. So I type this keyword in Google and here are the results…
And what I am looking at here is the websites that come up on this first page. As you can see most of them are Bodybuilding.com results, then there is womenshealthmag.com, and legionathletics.com.
These are all very authoritative sites. They have thousands of articles, lots of social sharing, tons of visitors, and are just massive websites. These are extremely difficult to outrank and for this reason my example of the keyword “protein powder for women and weight loss” is not a good keyword to target.
What you want to see when you check the SERP is a bunch of small websites, such as blogs. These will be much easier to compete with and outrank. That being said…
You CAN Outrank Large Authority Sites
If you look at the SERP screenshot above, you will see that all of the top results do NOT have “protein powder for women and weight loss” in their article verbatim (word for word). This is because Google doesn’t just rank articles on the exact keywords. Their algorithm ranks based on relevance to the keyword search as well.
So if you would write an article targeting word for word “protein powder for women and weight loss”, you would have an advantage over every search result on the SERP example above. I’m not saying you would outrank them, but you might.
It is often that the SERP contains results that do not have the keyword verbatim, and this is good for you. Just because you see some very authoritative sites doesn’t mean you can’t rank on page 1. Those authoritative site’s articles might not have a high relevance score with Google. Maybe Google didn’t have any good articles to rank for that keyword, so they just chose some semi-relevant ones from authoritative websites that they ranked. Its hard to say.
Ok, So Lets Recap
- You need to find a keyword using a tool like Jaaxy that has a good amount of search volume so that if you do get ranked you actually get some traffic
- You need to find a keyword that has low competition (I suggest less than 100 competitors) so that it is easier to rank high in Google for it
- You need to check the SERP competition and see how authoritative the websites are that you are going to be competing with
And lastly, one little thing that I didn’t mention is that your keyword needs to make sense. There are plenty of keywords that don’t really make much sense that have really good statistics. Hold back from using these. Google is continually advancing their algorithm to be more user friendly and they don’t like articles that are written for computers, they want ones that are written for real readers.
